Scientists have only recently discovered the power of fragrance, but cultures around the world have recognized it for thousands of years.
The perfume industry is one of the world's oldest. The bible contains records of trading aromatic herbs such as cinnamon, frankincense and myrrh. Ancient Egyptian physicians treated emotions and mental health problems using aromatic plant oils. After the fall of Rome, perfumes became rare and the medicinal use of essential oils died out. But aromatherapy survived in the Middle East and Europeans that traveled to the Holy Land found aromatic medical preparations and perfumes. France would later become the world capital of perfumery.
Modern research has shown that some scents, such as lavender, increase alpha brain waves associated with relaxation. Jasmine, on the other hand increases beta waves linked to alertness. The US is now doing double blinded studies on many herbs. Many of these studies has been completed and the results made public. That is why we are now hearing so much about certain herbs and how wonderful they are. However, around the world these studies were done a long time ago. Doctors in Europe, China and France often recommend natural remedies first and pharmacutical remedies as the alternative.
It is easy to learn about natural remedies. Just start slow and watch for late breaking news regarding any healing that interests you. Then study more. Be careful to check for any cautions that may pertain to any herb before trying.
The field of Aromatherapy is exciting and pleasurable at the same time. Bring it into your life a little at a time. Peace will follow.
